Laminate Floor Installation - Preparing the Room

Preparing to install laminate flooring is pretty easy because you can usually install it right over the existing flooring as long as it has been cleaned thoroughly. There are some exceptions, of course, so follow the manufacturer's directions.

Begin by removing the shoe moldings. Remove baseboards if you want to replace them with laminate versions. Cut the door jam and the trim so the flooring will fit underneath. If you'll be installing a finishing strip, such as a reducer, you may need to install a temporary backstop in the doorway. Previously installed wood flooring over concrete usually has to be removed.

Remove Shoe Moldings
Break the paint seal between shoe molding and baseboard with a utility knife. Wedge a slotted screwdriver under the molding to pop it up, then pry it out with a pry bar. Protect the baseboard with a shim.
Trimming Door Frames
Lay a floor plank upside down on top of piece of underlayment and vapor barrier. Cut off the bottom of the jamb and casing with a jamb saw. The plank should slide easily underneath.
Fastening 1x2 backstop
Drill pilot holes for three 2 1/4" No. 8 screws through the side of the 1x2 and into the floor. Center one hole in the doorway and place the others about 3 inches from each end. Drive in the screws.
